How to Find Smarter Routes from Europe to Asia
A direct flight from your nearest airport is not always the best-value option. Comparing departures from Zurich, Vienna, Munich, Milan and other reachable airports can reveal different fares, schedules and connections through Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Dubai.
There is no route, airline or booking window that is consistently cheapest. The useful comparison is the total trip cost for your dates: airfare, baggage, seat selection, transport to the departure airport, accommodation during a long connection and the value of your time.
Routes, fare examples and operational details below were checked on 31 October 2026. Airline schedules and prices can change.
Why Comparing Different Gateways Can Help
Airfares vary by origin, destination, date, demand and fare conditions. A nearby airport may have a better itinerary, but the lower headline fare can disappear once positioning transport, checked baggage or an overnight stay is included.
- Compare several reachable departure airports for exactly the same travel dates.
- Check flexible-date calendars if your trip can move by a few days.
- Compare elapsed travel time as well as the ticket price.
- Use the same baggage and ticket-flexibility requirements for every result.
- Confirm whether every flight is on one reservation or on separate tickets.

Four Routes Worth Comparing
1. Zurich via Istanbul to Bangkok, Singapore or Phuket
Turkish Airlines sells itineraries from Zurich to Bangkok and Singapore and lists Phuket among its destinations from Zurich. Use these as comparison options rather than assuming they will be cheapest. Check the itinerary’s connection airport, total duration and baggage allowance before booking.
Check Zurich–Bangkok options on the Turkish Airlines website.
2. Vienna via Abu Dhabi to Bangkok or Singapore
Etihad sells Vienna–Bangkok and Vienna–Singapore itineraries through its network. Compare these as through-ticket options with departures from your closest airport.
The former suggestion to combine Wizz Air Abu Dhabi with Etihad is no longer appropriate. Wizz Air Holdings announced that Wizz Air Abu Dhabi would suspend locally based operations from 1 September 2025. Current searches should therefore use the services actually offered for the selected dates rather than relying on that old combination.
Check Vienna–Singapore with Etihad or read the Wizz Air Holdings operational announcement.
3. Munich via Doha to Bangkok
Qatar Airways states that its Munich–Bangkok itinerary connects through Doha. It is a practical comparison route for travellers who can reach Munich, but its value depends on the dates, fare conditions and cost of getting to the airport.
Review the Munich–Bangkok route on Qatar Airways.
4. Milan via Dubai to Bali or other Asian destinations
Emirates lists Milan–Dubai service as well as itineraries from Milan to Bali and other destinations in Asia. Milan can therefore be included in a multi-airport search, particularly for travellers within reasonable reach of northern Italy. Compare the full journey rather than assuming Milan or Emirates will have the lowest fare.
Check Milan–Dubai service on the Emirates website.
What Current Fare Pages Can—and Cannot—Tell You
Official airline fare pages checked on 31 October 2026 displayed examples including CHF631 for Zurich–Bangkok, fares from €606 for selected Vienna–Singapore dates in November and December 2026, and fares from €506 for selected Vienna–Bangkok dates. These are dated examples, not normal or guaranteed prices.
| Route | Example shown when checked | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Zurich–Bangkok | CHF631 | Recheck the required dates and fare conditions |
| Vienna–Singapore | From €606 on selected dates | Compare nearby dates and total journey time |
| Vienna–Bangkok | From €506 on selected dates | Confirm baggage and ticket flexibility |
Turkish Airlines and Etihad warn that displayed fares may have been collected recently and may no longer be available when a traveller books. This is why fixed “typical price” ranges quickly become misleading. Check a live result for the exact dates and passenger requirements instead.

When to Search and Book
There is no verified universal rule that Europe-to-Asia flights should be booked six to ten weeks before departure, nor are February, May and November always the cheapest months. Demand varies by route and date.
Start comparing once your likely travel window is known. Google Flights provides a date grid, price graph, nearby-airport comparison and price tracking based on the route and dates entered. Use those route-specific signals instead of relying on a single booking-window rule.
- Search the same destination from each airport you can realistically reach.
- Check a few dates on either side of the preferred departure and return.
- Set tracking for the precise route and dates if you are not ready to book.
- Open the airline’s website to verify the itinerary, fare rules and final price.
See Google’s instructions for finding flight prices and comparing dates and tracking flight prices.
Be Careful with Positioning Flights and Separate Tickets
A cheap flight to another European airport can reduce the initial fare, but it can also create a self-transfer. If the positioning flight and long-haul flight are on separate tickets, the second airline may treat a late arrival as a missed flight rather than a protected connection.
EU passenger-rights guidance links missed-connection protection to flights booked as part of a single reservation. With separate tickets, airlines are not generally required to compensate a passenger for missing the second flight because the first was delayed. Review the official EU air-passenger rights guidance before building a self-transfer.
- Allow substantial time between separate tickets; an overnight stay may be safer than a short same-day connection.
- Account for baggage collection, immigration, terminal changes and a second check-in deadline.
- Check transit and entry requirements for every country involved.
- Compare the saving with the cost of accommodation and the financial risk of disruption.
Tools for Comparing the Complete Trip
- Google Flights: compare dates, nearby airports and tracked prices before verifying the result with the airline.
- Skyscanner: use it to discover possible routes and agencies, then compare baggage, fare rules and the final checkout price.
- Airline websites: confirm that the flights are sold on one reservation and review change, cancellation and baggage terms.
- Hotel platforms: compare the exact rate conditions. Booking.com explains that cancellation terms vary by property and rate; use its cancellation filter and verify the deadline shown for the selected room.
For accommodation terms, see the Booking.com cancellation FAQ.
A Practical Final Comparison
Shortlist two or three complete itineraries, then record the airfare, included baggage, positioning cost, accommodation, total travel time and separate-ticket exposure for each. The smartest route is the one that offers the best overall trade-off for your dates—not necessarily the itinerary with the lowest advertised fare.
